Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center is redefining the future of community healthcare with the construction of its new six-story patient tower in Rockville, Maryland. The 150,000-square-foot expansion is designed to elevate both the patient’s experience and the delivery of care. Key additions include an expanded emergency department, a modern intensive care unit, and a new medical-surgical unit. With all-private patient rooms and a rooftop helipad, the tower is set to support more personalized, efficient, and immediate care.
A defining element of the project is its patient-centered design. Every feature—from abundant natural light and large windows to the inclusion of landscaped outdoor patios and an ICU terrace—reflects a commitment to healing environments. Thoughtfully decentralized nursing stations positioned outside rooms will improve visibility and response times, strengthening the connection between caregivers and patients.
Sustainability is a core focus of the new tower, incorporating several green innovations aimed at environmental stewardship and operational efficiency. The building will utilize cogeneration to recycle heat into electricity, reducing energy costs. A 20,000-square-foot green roof will aid in stormwater management and improve building insulation, while energy-efficient systems like cogeneration and daylight harvesting reduce resource use and costs. Locally sourced construction materials and high-performance window glazing further support the project’s eco-conscious approach, setting a new standard for responsible healthcare design.
