Dennis Avenue Health Center

Challenge

Demand for the health center’s numerous important and highly sensitive programs, including Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response, Immunization, Disease Control, STD Services, Communicable Disease and Epidemiology, HIV Care, and the Tuberculosis Control, has grown by more than tenfold. The existing building, which was originally an elementary school, was undersized and no longer adequate to effectively meet the needs of the community.

Outcome

A replacement health center, located adjacent to the original facility, addresses the space shortage and ensured uninterrupted services for the community during construction.  To protect patients and staff from the transmission of infectious disease, the design of the new facility features two buildings joined by a common entry lobby – one for the Tuberculosis Control program and one for the remaining program elements.

Wilmot Sanz provided healthcare planning and architecture to the design team.  Grimm + Parker Architects was the architect of record.
