Wilmot Sanz has been working with Christiana Care Health Services in Delaware since 2002. At Christiana Hospital, the firm has designed a major patient tower expansion, as well as numerous smaller scale renovation projects. The hospital’s major, 342,000 sq. ft. E-Tower expansion adds 172 private inpatient beds, with the ability to flex to 204 beds at peak census.

Completed in 2007, the tower also features an integrated suite of cardiac and vascular interventional rooms. With this unique concept, Christiana Care brings together specialists from cardiac catheterization, angiography, and electrophysiology. By allowing these disciplines that traditionally compete for patients and resources to share lounge, charting, and prep/hold/recovery areas, the hospital has better integrated the care process, encouraging greater collaboration between related specialists. Furthermore, we designed the adjacent treatment areas as flexible environments. With relatively little difficulty, equipment in rooms can be changed, providing the ability to adjust functions to meet the hospital’s future care needs.

Finally, the expansion also includes a state-of-the-art education and conference center with simulation labs, multipurpose space, and advanced audiovisual capabilities. A fully digital, networked medical library is connected with the reference collections of the Delaware Academy of Medicine to create an invaluable medical resource for physicians and staff.
