Expansion and modernization promotes patient healing and easy access to outpatient services
Washington Hospital Center is beginning a major expansion and renewal project to replace its outdated facilities and better satisfy the healthcare needs of the District of Columbia and surrounding area. The first phases of development include a replacement bed tower, ambulatory care center and a 1,300-space parking deck.
The new tower, known as the West Hospital Addition, will consist of approximately 250,000 SF of added space. It will add 96 acuity adaptable medical/surgical beds and 44 ICU beds, as well as four new operating rooms.
New and renovated space will right-size the emergency department to accommodate 85,000 annual visits. Expansions to the pharmacy, laboratory and imaging will compensate for the additional volume of ED traffic. New helipads will sit above the ambulance canopy.
A 45,000-SF ambulatory care building will include a surgery suite with eight operating rooms, imaging, a pre-surgical testing center, a quick-test laboratory and surgical support space. The second floor will be shelled for future office support use.
