New women's hospital and integrated patient tower
Inova Fairfax Hospital is one of the premier healthcare facilities in the Washington, DC area. Wilmot Sanz worked with the hospital to develop a Master Facilities Plan that addresses the evolving healthcare needs of the region and has recently completed two building projects (the Heart & Vascular Institute and the Surgery Department) included in the plan.
The existing Women's and Children's Hospital, constructed in 1992, is undersized for present community needs. After a new replacement is completed, the master plan calls for the existing facility to be renovated and backfilled, dedicating it exclusively to the children's service line.
Wilmot Sanz, with medical planning support from SmithGroup, is designing the new facility. The master plan establishes an "Integrated Bed Tower Approach" that places the new, expanded women's hospital on the lower floors of the project and integrates a medical/surgical replacement bed tower on the upper floors.
The project, when finished, will consist of 396 beds with the capacity to add 108 more, for a total possible capacity of 508 beds. The women's hospital portion of the project will include women's surgical beds, postpartum beds, HRP beds and shell space to accommodate future expansion.
The new building is being designed with a flexible floor plate that will allow for multiple room types, including typical medical surgical rooms, postpartum rooms, critical care rooms and LDRs. With advances in medical care and technology coupled with the changes in clinical needs, this flexible chassis allows for the rapid conversion of clinical areas with minimal disruption and reduced renovation costs.
