A growth plan for an urban hospital that is sensitive to context
Wilmot Sanz developed a short- and long-term master plan
for Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. This plan started with
a major rezoning effort to maximize the FAR potential of the 20-acre campus while preserving the excellent relationship Sibley has with its neighbors.
The goal is to provide a plan for the delivery of a larger variety
of healthcare services integrated into the hospital's existing service
lines. This will create a medical destination unique to the Washington,
DC area.
The strategy includes designs to accommodate projected
increased demand for emergency services, imaging and diagnostic
services, integrated outpatient services, physician's office space
and responses to consumer demands for private patient rooms and
upgraded facilities.
A rerouting of traffic to a new "front
door" for the campus creates a dramatic entry sequence for
the medical center while decreasing the traffic burden on the residential
side of the campus.
