Expansion of an emergency department and trauma center

“Interior design” maintains the continuity of the overall design concepts. Through the use of lighting, materials, and furnishings, it further defines and supports the circulation, function, and articulation of spaces established by the architectural program. It adds emotion to raw space and clarifies its use.

The emergency department/trauma center at INOVA Fairfax Hospital is one of the largest in the mid-Atlantic region. The design of the facility’s expansion and renovation will incorporate state-of-the-art concepts in patient processing and will accommodate a projected 85,000 patient visits a year by 2008. The project includes 19,000 square feet of new space and 20,650 square feet of renovated space, and will increase the number of treatment positions from 35 to 54. A new 3,500-square-foot ambulance dock and elevated helipad will also be added.

Improved patient processing objectives resulted in the development of "Quick Care," pediatric, and acute care treatment pods, organized to facilitate non-linear patient care. Registration, diagnosis, and treatment of patients will proceed concurrently to speed patient processing through the emergency department.
