A comprehensive modernization and expansion of a community hospital

Wilmot Sanz has assisted Howard County General Hospital, a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, with all of its expansion projects since 1995.

Recently completed in the summer of 2009, the New Pavilion project provides the hospital with a new patient care tower. Each of the 90 all-private patient rooms features distinct zones for patients, family members and staff, encouraging visitors to spend time with the patient without impeding the physicians' ability to deliver care.

Also part of the tower are a new main lobby, pharmacy and outpatient services department, including gyms for both cardiopulmonary and adult and pediatric rehabilitation.

Ongoing renovations will refit the hospital's older patient tower, ultimately creating 62 private beds from the existing semi-private patient rooms. Additional renovations include a major redesign of the surgery department, a new laboratory department, new wound center, new MRI, new dialysis unit and an expansion to the existing mother/child unit.

With this comprehensive expansion and renovation project, the hospital sought to modernize its image, with abundant natural lighting and transitional interiors contributing to the design of an environment that encourages healing.

The 2000 Expansion Project included the West Wing Addition that houses a new 47-bay emergency department, including a 12 room Pediatric ED and an adjacent six-bed pediatric inpatient nursing unit.

The 81,000-SF expansion, 44,000-SF renovation project also included a 17-bed neonatal intensive care unit, a 12-bed labor/delivery suite, and expanded facilities for maintenance and engineering. Major renovations created a new 16-bed intensive care unit and an expanded imaging department.
